Microsoft is investigating problems with the August updates for Windows Server 2019, which can paralyze them.
Problematic Windows update.
The recent security patches released during Microsoft’s August Patchday might lead to performance issues in Windows Server 2019. Microsoft acknowledged the issue and is actively seeking resolutions while providing interim fixes.
Administrators might notice that their Windows Server 2019 could turn unusually slow or unresponsive post the security patch implementation this August. Specific difficulties include high CPU usage majorly relating to cryptographic processes. The detailed impacts are shared in the Windows Release Health documentation. It is noted that these problems might arise when the antivirus software operating on the servers scans the %systemroot%system32catroot2
directory, which is crucial for cataloging Windows updates, due to a potential enumeration bug.
Microsoft states, “Our investigations indicate that the disruptions are confined to specific circumstances.” Affected systems may show various symptoms such as heightened CPU activity, greater disk access times and usage, potential degradation in the performance of apps or the operating system itself, or issues in initiating the CryptSVC service. Some of the more severe consequences include the system booting to a black screen, slow start-up times, or completely unresponsive systems.
Since these scenarios are usually used in enterprise environments, it is unlikely that home users of Windows Home or Pro will observe this behavior.
Microsoft is initially addressing the problem with the Known Issues rollback mechanism, which can remove faulty updates or update components. For IT managers, the company also provides a special group policy for download in the Windows Release Health notes, which can be found under “Computer Configuration” – “Adminsitrative Templates” – “Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019 KB5041578 240816_21501 Known Issue Rollback” after it has been installed. The GPOs are specialized for different Windows versions and require a restart to become active.
The developers are working on an automatic solution for upcoming Windows updates. It will then no longer be necessary to download and install the group policy. However, Microsoft has not yet announced when the solution will be available.
