Troubleshooting Guide: Overcoming MSU Update Installation Failures in Windows 11 24H2

Deluxe company -

Microsoft has issued a warning regarding challenges in installing Windows 11 updates. The company reports that following the September 2024 update, attempts to install future updates could be hindered, displaying an error that reads “Operation is not supported”. A fix for this is currently in development.

The issue first emerged after the rollout of the Windows 11 24H2 update this September, identified by KB5043080. Post-installation, users might face obstacles with new updates.

Every version of Windows 11 24H2, whether running on ARM, Intel, or AMD, is experiencing this issue. It primarily appears when updates are manually installed using the Windows Update Standalone Installer (MSU), and users are confronted with the error message “Operation is not supported” upon attempting to execute an MSU package through double-clicking.

This problem stems from the newly implemented “Checkpoint Cumulative Updates” approach by Microsoft with Windows 11 24H2. Although designed to streamline and expedite the update process by reducing the updates’ size, this change has inadvertently led to difficulties with installations.

Microsoft describes a scenario where issues arise when either a Feature on Demand (FoD) or Language Pack (LP) is installed locally without access to Windows Update (WU) or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). This situation prevents these components from being updated, causing installation errors.

The company has addressed this issue by recommending that affected users download and reinstall all Checkpoint Cumulative Updates to prevent future issues, necessitating users to take steps on their own. Detailed guidelines have been made available by Microsoft.

This isn’t the only issue related to updates that has surfaced with Windows 11 24H2 recently. It’s uncertain whether Microsoft will roll out an automated fix soon as they have not yet released a statement regarding this matter.

MSU files, known as Microsoft Update Standalone Installer, are a type of standalone update file used primarily by Microsoft Windows. These files, identifiable by the .MSU extension, are commonly utilized by advanced users and system administrators for manual update installations.

For most home users, the issue might not be evident since they often rely on automatic updates. However, businesses and advanced users who manually update their systems might be more affected. Additional measures will now be required for these users to maintain updated systems.
