Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is now deprecated, and it is no longer being actively developed. Microsoft will no longer be adding new features to WSUS or actively updating it, as they are halting any future investments in WSUS functionalities.
Introduced by Microsoft in 2005, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) allowed IT administrators to deploy and manage updates across multiple Microsoft products within an enterprise environment. This was a solution for environments where manual updates were impractical. However, Microsoft has decided to phase out WSUS, prompting IT administrators and businesses to move towards Microsoft’s cloud solutions instead.
While WSUS will still maintain its existing functionality and continue to receive updates through the WSUS channel, Microsoft will not enhance it further. This decision particularly impacts enterprises that depend on WSUS for their update management. Notably, Microsoft has also phased out WSUS driver synchronization in favor of its newer cloud-based driver services, with this change set to take effect on April 18, 2025.
According to a blog post by Microsoft, the deprecation of WSUS does not affect the existing capabilities or support associated with Microsoft Configuration Manager.
Though WSUS is available on Windows Server 2025, Microsoft recommends organizations to start using cloud tools like Windows Autopatch and Microsoft Intune for client update management, and Azure Update Manager for server update management. It is up to organizations and their IT policies to decide on using the existing WSUS functionality or cloud-based tools. The cloud-based tools will get regular updates and new functionalities as they have been cited as the replacements for WSUS.
