Windows Server Insiders have exciting news as Microsoft has unveiled a new build of the forthcoming Windows Server Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) Preview.
This latest build, identified as Build 26296, features both the Desktop Experience and Server Core installation options for the Datacenter and Standard editions, along with the Annual Channel for Container Host, and the Azure Edition, dedicated exclusively to VM evaluation.
The company has announced that the latest build features refreshed branding in preparation for the release of Windows Server 2025. Testers are encouraged to reference the Windows Server 2025 preview when submitting reports on any issues encountered. This build will be provided automatically for users who have Server Flighting enabled.
This new build introduces the Windows Server 2025 Security Baseline Preview, which enables testers to implement a variety of recommended security configurations for virtual machine roles directly through the Windows Admin Center.
The security baseline encompasses more than 350 settings, categorized into three distinct groups: Domain Controller (DC), Member Server, and Workgroup Member.
Additionally, Build 26296 brings a new feature allowing customers using the Windows Server 2025 preview to download and install Windows Admin Center directly from the Windows Server Desktop via the in-OS application.
There are several known issues to keep in mind, one of which involves the Sysprep tool. This tool, used to generalize Windows installations for imaging, is experiencing functionality problems in the latest build.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the label for the most recent flight may mistakenly indicate Windows 11. However, upon selection, Microsoft clarifies that the package being installed is actually the Windows Server update.
In related news, Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) is set to be officially deprecated next year.
