Researchers at 0Patch have recently confirmed a critical zero-day vulnerability that affects Windows 7 through 11 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and later. This threat, which allows attackers to obtain users’ NTLM credentials, poses a significant risk as it requires no advanced techniques to exploit. Simply viewing a malicious file in Windows Explorer can trigger the exploit.
The vulnerability has been reported to Microsoft, but as of now, there is no official patch or Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) identification for it. The technical details of the exploit are being withheld from the public until a corrective action is taken by Microsoft.
According to Mitja Kolsek, the founder of Acros Security which operates 0Patch, the threat is severe because it could allow an attacker to access sensitive credentials by tricking a user into opening a malicious file or even just by browsing the folder where such a file has been downloaded.
In the meantime, users of affected Windows versions can rely on free "micropatches" available through the 0Patch platform to mitigate the risks while awaiting a formal fix from Microsoft. These micropatches are particularly valuable as they are compatible with systems that are no longer officially supported.
