Windows 11 and 10 users have recently encountered an unexpected ‘inetpub’ folder on their systems after installing the April 2025 updates. This folder, typically associated with the Internet Information Services (IIS) web server, appears even on systems that do not have IIS installed. While Microsoft has confirmed that its creation is intentional, the exact reason remains unclear.
The newly created ‘inetpub’ folder is empty and can be found in the root directory of the C: drive. Normally, if IIS is installed, it utilizes this folder to store logs, website content, and other server-related files, making its presence without IIS unusual. Microsoft’s updates, specifically the Windows 11 KB5055523 and Windows 10 KB5055518, seem to be the trigger for this folder’s appearance.
Though some users had deleted the folder without any issues, Microsoft advised against this action, assuring that the folder does not affect system stability or performance. It’s important to note that no new software accompanied the folder’s appearance on users’ systems.
In case anyone needs to use IIS, it can be enabled by accessing the "Windows Features" section through the Start Menu. As for the mystery of the ‘inetpub’ folder, users are left waiting for further clarification from Microsoft.
