Microsoft has issued a warning regarding Windows Server 2025, stating that domain controllers may become inaccessible after a restart. This issue arises because affected servers revert to the default firewall profile following reboot, conflicting with the necessary domain firewall profile and disrupting applications and services.
Organizations that depend on Active Directory for managing network resources and user verification are particularly concerned about this problem. As an interim fix, Microsoft has provided a solution for IT administrators: they can manually restart the network adapter of the affected servers using PowerShell with the command: Restart-NetAdapter *. However, this temporary solution must be reapplied with every restart of the domain controller, prompting Microsoft to recommend the creation of a scheduled task for automatic adapter restarts after every reboot.
Since the release of Windows Server 2025 earlier this year, which includes significant updates like reboot-free patching for security updates and improved SSD support, this isn’t the first issue to arise. Previous concerns have included problems with remote desktop session freezes after certain updates and an incident in October 2024 where systems running Windows Server 2022 were unintentionally upgraded to Windows Server 2025.
Microsoft has indicated that a permanent solution for the current connectivity issue is under development and will be rolled out in a future update, but until then, system administrators will need to rely on the provided workaround.
