Microsoft is set to deprecate a relatively new feature known as Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) enclaves from older versions of Windows 11, including the 23H2 release and previous Windows Server versions. This announcement has raised concerns about the direction of Windows’ development, especially since this feature was only introduced in July 2024 as a notable enhancement for security.
VBS enclaves rely on Virtualization-Based Security, which allows the OS to operate within a secure virtual environment established by Microsoft’s Hyper-V hypervisor. This setup enables developers to create trusted execution environments directly within host applications, effectively providing a protected memory area as part of their software.
Despite Microsoft promoting VBS enclaves as a substantial improvement to software security, the company has decided to remove this feature from Windows 11 23H2. Those using the feature may soon find themselves facing interruptions, particularly business users who have integrated it into their operations. While Microsoft typically continues supporting deprecated features until they are completely stripped from the codebase, the fast-paced Windows update cycle means that many users may upgrade before the final removal.
The departure of VBS enclaves may be linked to the company’s rapid development cycles and the push for streamlined updates, which aim to resolve potential reliability issues by not supporting older builds.
