Last week, Microsoft acknowledged that users of Windows 10 and Windows Server 2022 faced an error when installing updates from April, specifically error code 0x80070643. This code has been a recurring annoyance for many.
Fortunately, Microsoft has addressed the issue for users of Windows 10 22H2, 21H2, and Server 2022. According to the Windows Release Health Notes, the problems were remedied with updated packages. Users applying the update KB5057588 after April 21, 2025, should no longer encounter incorrect installation error messages. If the update was previously installed, it won’t be offered again. Users can verify their update status with the command Dism /Online /Get-Packages.
This issue began to surface widely when Microsoft’s update KB5057588 for the Windows Recovery Environment was installed. Users frequently saw the installation error message "0x80070643 – ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE." Microsoft clarified that this message was incorrect and had no impact on the functionality of updates or devices. Additionally, they noted that Windows Update might still display the update as failed until the next daily scan, after which the error should be cleared automatically.
Though Microsoft was able to quickly correct this display issue, the failures of updates related to BitLocker encryption last year showcased the challenges in providing automated solutions for such errors. In that instance, Microsoft ultimately ceased efforts to resolve code 0x80070643 automatically.
