Microsoft has been actively updating Windows hardware this week, recently announcing the retirement of Device metadata and WMIS alongside a series of changes to driver signing. In line with this effort, Microsoft has now introduced updated versions of the Hardware Lab Kit (HLK) and Virtual Hardware Lab Kit (VHLK) for Windows 11 24H2 and Server 2025.
The new HLK and VHLK updates replace the original Release to Manufacture (RTM) version from May 2024. This was confirmed by a release on May 6, 2025, from Microsoft’s official blog, which stated:
"Microsoft is pleased to announce that a refreshed HLK for Windows 11, version 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 is available starting May 6, 2025."
The refresh includes fixes for test errors, removals of outdated tests, and additions of new tests aimed at enhancing the quality of the overall testing process while minimizing the time spent addressing known issues.
For those unfamiliar, the Hardware Lab Kit (HLK) is a critical tool utilized by hardware manufacturers to validate drivers before they are included in Windows. Passing all HLK tests allows drivers to receive WHQL certification, Microsoft’s assurance of hardware compatibility.
The Virtual Hardware Lab Kit (VHLK) offers similar functionality but is tailored for virtualized environments, enabling testing through VMs and automated laboratories without needing physical machines.
Both HLK and VHLK are integral to the Windows Hardware Compatibility Program (WHCP), which guarantees that vendors can test their hardware and software against current Windows builds.
The latest HLK version introduces new tests that include Bluetooth LE Audio support and improved performance when handling Generation 2 virtual machines during VHLK testing.
