Microsoft has recently released unscheduled updates for Windows Server 2022 and Windows 10, addressing specific issues related to Hyper-V and Bitlocker.
Over the weekend, the company announced an unplanned update for Windows Server 2022, which was detailed in the Windows Message Center. This update targets problems that could cause certain confidential virtual machines (VMs) running in Hyper-V to stop responding or restart unexpectedly. This situation can affect service availability and necessitates manual intervention, most significantly impacting Azure Confidential VMs. Microsoft has indicated that standard Hyper-V environments should not be affected unless rare configurations are in use.
The update, tagged as KB5061906, upgrades the operating system to version 20348.3695 and is classified as a non-security update. Users who have not yet applied the May security updates are encouraged to utilize this fix, although it is not mandatory for those who are not experiencing issues due to these problems.
Additionally, earlier last week, another unscheduled update was issued to rectify issues affecting specific Intel vPro processors utilizing Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) in conjunction with Bitlocker. As noted in the Windows Message Center, the previous May security update may inadvertently disrupt the “lsass.exe” process, leading to the initiation of the automatic repair function. This can cause devices equipped with Bitlocker encryption to request recovery keys unexpectedly.
The knowledgebase entry KB5061768 describes this Windows 10 update, which is designed to tackle the aforementioned issue. It specifically applies to Windows 10 versions 21H2 and 22H2, including the Enterprise LTSC 2021 and IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 versions. Like the previous updates, this one is also distributed exclusively through the Windows Update Catalog, with non-business environments likely unaffected by the problems.
These recent unscheduled updates represent a trend at Microsoft, which has seen an increase in such fixes in recent months, including one that corrected a display error for certain group policies earlier in April.
