Two steps forward, one step back – this encapsulates the current situation surrounding the Windows security updates released by Microsoft on June Patchday. While these updates have introduced new issues for certain Surface devices, they have also resolved two older problems stemming from prior updates.
Microsoft has issued a warning regarding the June security update, particularly for the Surface Hub v1 devices, which may encounter boot failures accompanied by the following error message:
Secure Boot ViolationInvalid signature detected. Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup
Devices such as Surface Hub 2S and 3 are reportedly unaffected. On June 11, Microsoft announced it had implemented countermeasures to safeguard other Surface Hub v1 devices, but the company has yet to detail these measures. Investigations into the root cause of the issue are ongoing, with Windows 10 22H2 identified as the impacted operating system.
Conversely, Microsoft has rectified issues related to firewall profiles that arose after the April Patchday updates for Windows Server 2025 domain controllers. Previously, restarting machines would cause difficulties in accessing or switching to the domain firewall profile, leading to potential failures of applications and services linked to the devices within the network. The company had initially recommended restarting the network adapter as a temporary fix. However, it is now noted that the June security update has effectively resolved this issue.
Another complication from the April updates involved authentication problems with “Windows Hello for Business” during Active Directory operations. This was traced back to modifications in the certificate verification process for Kerberos public key cryptography on domain controllers, intended to mitigate security vulnerabilities. However, Microsoft claims that the patches issued for the server versions in June have now addressed this concern.
