Microsoft has announced the removal of PowerShell 2.0 from Windows 11 starting August 2025 and from Windows Server in September 2025. This decision follows a gradual phase-out that began in 2017, when PowerShell 2.0 was labeled obsolete. Although Microsoft previously announced the intention to remove the version, a specific timeline was not provided until now.
Initially launched with Windows 7, PowerShell 2.0 included over 240 cmdlets along with significant features such as remoting and an integrated scripting environment (ISE). Its continued presence in Windows was primarily for compatibility with older Microsoft products like Exchange Server, SQL Server, and SharePoint. The removal is aligned with Microsoft’s strategy to eliminate outdated legacy code, simplify PowerShell, and enhance the overall security of the Windows operating system.
Following this transition, any scripts that currently target PowerShell 2.0 will auto-redirect to PowerShell 5.1, which maintains compatibility with many existing scripts. However, Microsoft advises users to update scripts to remove any dependencies unique to version 2.0.
This decision marks the end of a significant 17-year era in Windows administration dominated by PowerShell 2.0, paving the way for a more modern and secure environment. Microsoft encourages users to migrate to newer PowerShell versions, including the cross-platform PowerShell 7, which introduces enhanced functionalities and up-to-date support.
