Windows Update: New Problems Encountered, Old Ones Solved

The recent Windows updates released as part of Microsoft’s August Patchday have resulted in unexpected issues for various versions of the operating system. Despite these setbacks, the company has managed to resolve some older problems.

Initial Good News

Among the updates is the fix for an issue with the Windows 11 24H2 update failing when distributed via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). According to the Windows Release Health note, Microsoft has addressed this concern. If the issue persists, administrators are advised to refresh and re-sync with WSUS. Users who have implemented the Known Issue Rollback (KIR) policy no longer require that policy.

Challenges with Reset and Restore

However, not all news was positive. Users attempting to reset or restore their devices have reported failures following the installation of the August updates. Issues arise when using the "System" options such as “Restore,” “Reset this PC,” or during attempts to fix problems with Windows Update. This bug affects several versions, including Windows 11 23H2, 22H2, and Windows 10 22H2, as well as various Enterprise and IoT versions. Microsoft intends to roll out an out-of-band update to address this bug, but no timeline has been provided yet.

Upgrade Issues

Additionally, Microsoft acknowledged that upgrades involving August patches could fail with the error code 0x8007007F. Issues have been noted for clients and servers upgrading from Windows 10 versions 1809, 21H2, and 22H2 to Windows 11 23H2 and 22H2, and from Windows Server 2016 to the later releases. However, updates to Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 have not been affected. Microsoft expects that affected users will simply need to retry the installation after the corrections made on the subsequent Friday.
