Microsoft has addressed two significant bugs stemming from its August 2025 Patch Tuesday updates that hindered Windows 11 upgrades and disrupted reset and recovery tools for both Windows 10 and 11 users. These issues arose from the cumulative security updates identified as KB5063875, KB5063709, and KB5063877. Users of Windows 11 versions (22H2 and 23H2) as well as Windows 10 version 22H2 found themselves affected by these installation errors, which prevented system upgrades and malfunctioned recovery tools.
The resolution was made possible through an out-of-band cumulative update (KV5066189) released on August 19, 2025, which aimed to restore functionality to the broken reset and recovery tools. "This update addresses an issue introduced by the August 2025 security update where attempts to reset or recover the device might fail," stated Microsoft in their announcement. Although there was no specific patch for the upgrade error, the matter was marked as resolved by August 18.
The affected features included "Reset this PC," the “Fix problems using Windows Update” function, and enterprise-specific functions like the “RemoteWipe CSP.” Users of Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC versions and IoT enterprises were also impacted, while server products remained unaffected.
In addition to these issues, users experienced upgrade failures due to an error marked as 0x8007007F, notably among those using Windows Server versions 2022 and 2019. Fortunately, Microsoft announced that devices attempting an upgrade post-August 15 should no longer encounter this error, citing that reattempting the upgrade typically resolves the issue.
The August Patch Tuesday also included critical updates addressing 107 vulnerabilities across various products, including Windows, Exchange, and SharePoint.
