Azure Expands Compute Options with September Updates Across Regions

Deluxe company -

Microsoft Azure recently announced several significant updates for September 2025, focusing on enhancing computational capabilities and deploying its cloud computing platform more widely. The introduction of Azure Local 2509 brings improved virtual machine management, new operating system versions, and enhanced security features.

Azure Local 2509 and Its Dual-Boot Operating System

The Azure Local 2509 version includes two releases: solution version 12.2509.1001.22 with OS version 26100.6584, and solution version 11.2509.1001.21 with OS version 25398.1849. This dual-boot operating system supports earlier versions for local deployments and can be accessed via the Azure portal. It operates on new OS versions compatible with Windows Server 2025, ensuring ongoing support for the necessary drivers.

Virtual Machine Performance and Storage Management

The latest release introduces significant enhancements for virtual machines. Users can now view dependent resources on a storage path prior to deletion and perform bulk operations to remove both the storage path and its dependencies seamlessly. Furthermore, Azure allows live updates on memory resources while the virtual machine is running, although compatibility with guest operating systems may require a restart in some cases.

Updates to the .NET Framework

The update brings a substantial change in the .NET Framework, with the new build version 8.0.20 significantly improving both ASP.NET Core and the .NET Runtime. Users have the flexibility to upgrade their operating systems for better performance. Additionally, the default OS disk size for AKS virtual machines has been increased from 100 GB to 200 GB, supporting a broader range of containerized workload sizes.

Enhancements in Security Features

Azure also focuses on security, rolling out a vulnerability management system that includes a comprehensive security baseline with 407 rules—an increase from the previous 324 assessed. This update offers improved compliance with industry standards such as the CIS Azure Compute and DISA security guidelines.

Conclusion

These updates to Azure signify continued progress in cloud computing infrastructure, with notable improvements in performance, security, and management that cater to enterprise needs. The mixed operating system model enables businesses to leverage advanced components, coupled with robust disaster recovery and security features, positioning Azure as a formidable option in hybrid cloud implementations.
