Microsoft has recently implemented hardware-accelerated BitLocker in Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025. This new feature is designed to take advantage of the high-speed capabilities of modern NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) drives, which have dramatically increased the performance expectations for computers.
Rafal Sosnowski from Microsoft outlined the benefits of this update, stating that while NVMe drives can deliver rapid data transfer rates, they also need optimized processing for demanding tasks like real-time encryption and decryption by BitLocker. The introduction of hardware-accelerated BitLocker was first revealed during the Ignite 2025 event in November.
With this hardware acceleration, users of BitLocker on NVMe-based SSDs can experience a significant average reduction of 70% in CPU usage, compared to previous versions. This not only enhances performance but also prolongs battery life, ensuring that utilizing encryption won’t slow down system responsiveness.
To verify if your PC or server is utilizing hardware-accelerated BitLocker, you can use the command line tool with administrative privileges:
manage-bde -statusIf the drive’s encryption method shows "Hardware Accelerated," then the feature is enabled. It’s worth noting that this functionality may not be available in the Windows 11 Home version, which supports only a simplified encryption called Device Encryption.
