Microsoft is investigating problems with the August updates for Windows Server 2019, which can paralyze them.
Problematic Windows update.
The August Patchday security updates for Windows Server have been causing disruptions in Windows Server 2019, with Microsoft actively investigating and proposing interim fixes.
Post-update, network administrators might note that their systems show signs of lagging, being non-responsive, and high CPU usage, especially related to cryptographic operations. This issue is detailed by Microsoft in the Windows Release Health notes. Reports suggest that this problem commonly occurs when antivirus programs scan the %systemroot%system32catroot2
directory, which houses Windows updates, due to a catalog enumeration fault.
Microsoft states, “Our investigation so far indicates that the issue arises under certain specific conditions.” If impacted, the devices may display symptoms such as heightened CPU activity, delayed drive response, poor system or application performance, or issues with starting the CryptSVC service, leading to a black startup screen, slow boot times, and system freezes or crashes.
Since these scenarios are usually used in enterprise environments, it is unlikely that home users of Windows Home or Pro will observe this behavior.
Microsoft is initially addressing the problem with the Known Issues rollback mechanism, which can remove faulty updates or update components. For IT managers, the company also provides a special group policy for download in the Windows Release Health notes, available under “Computer Configuration” – “Administrative Templates” – “Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019 KB5041578 240816_21501 Known Issue Rollback” after it has been installed. The GPOs are specialized for different Windows versions and require a restart to become active.
The developers are working on an automatic solution for upcoming Windows updates, which will eliminate the need to download and install the group policy. However, Microsoft has not yet announced when this solution will be available.
