Microsoft has released the latest Windows Server build for members of the Windows Server Insider Program. The new build number is 26304. Keep in mind that this and future Windows Server Insider builds now have the Windows Server 2025 branding.

A significant feature introduced in this release is the Windows Defender Application Control for Business (WDAC), which enhances security measures for Windows Server 2025. Below is the changelog:

What’s New

[NEW] Windows Defender Application Control for Business (WDAC)

Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) for business provides a software-based security layer aimed at minimizing the attack surface by enforcing a specific list of permitted software. For Windows Server 2025, we have established a Microsoft-defined ‘default policy’ that can be implemented on the server using PowerShell cmdlets, supported by our security configuration platform known as ‘OSconfig’. To gain further insights, please visit Windows Defender Application Control for Business (WDAC) – Microsoft Community Hub.

Windows Server 2025 Security Baseline Preview

We are excited to share that starting with build 26296, the Windows Server 2025 Security Baseline Preview is now available. You can enhance your security from the outset by adopting the recommended security posture for your device or VM role. This is achieved through a customized security baseline that encompasses over 350 preconfigured Windows security settings designed to help you implement and uphold detailed security configurations in line with best practices as endorsed by Microsoft and industry standards. The Windows Server 2025 Security Baseline content has been categorized into three groups according to server role:

Note: This security baseline should only be tested on non-production systems. Although there is a ‘Remove’ command, not all configurations are easily reversible. To gain further insights, please visit Announcing Windows Server 2025 Security Baseline Preview – Microsoft Community Hub .

Windows Server Flighting is here!!

If you have opted into Server Flighting, you can expect to receive the new build automatically later today. For further details, visit Welcome to Windows Insider flighting on Windows Server – Microsoft Community Hub.

The updated Feedback Hub app is now ready for Server Desktop users! It should automatically update to the latest version; if it doesn’t, you can simply Check for updates in the settings section of the app.

Known Issues

Download Windows Server Insider Preview (microsoft.com)

Flighting: The label for this flight may mistakenly indicate Windows 11. However, upon selection, the installed package is the Windows Server update. Please disregard the label and proceed with the installation of your flight. This discrepancy will be corrected in a future release.

WinPE – Powershell Scripts: Applying the WinPE-Powershell optional component does not correctly install Powershell in WinPE. Consequently, Powershell cmdlets will not function. Customers relying on Powershell in WinPE should avoid using this build.

If you are testing upgrades from Windows Server 2019 or 2022, it is advisable not to use this build, as intermittent upgrade failures have been reported.

This build has a problem where archiving event logs using the “wevetutil al” command results in the crash of the Windows Event Log service, causing the archive operation to fail. The service needs to be restarted by executing “Start-Service EventLog” from an elevated command line prompt.

If you have the Secure Launch/DRTM code path enabled, we advise against installing this build.
