Join the KDE Community: Help Test the Official KDE Linux Distribution!

Deluxe company -

The KDE project is introducing its own immutable Linux distribution, named KDE Linux, and is currently inviting users to help test the available builds. This new distribution offers users a unique way to experience the Plasma desktop, created directly by the developers without any third-party modifications.

While many users currently access KDE Plasma through distributions like Kubuntu, Manjaro, or Fedora KDE Spin—which often include their own branding and configurations—KDE Linux aims to provide a pure reference implementation of what the KDE developers envisioned for the desktop environment.

KDE Linux, codenamed "Project Banana," stands apart from KDE neon, which is an Ubuntu-based distribution that adds modifications and is, therefore, subject to external control. In contrast, KDE Linux is a completely distinct operating system built on Arch Linux principles (but is not classified as an ‘Arch-based’ distro) and features a read-only base system with atomic image-based updates that allow rollback functionality.

With a sole focus on Wayland, KDE Linux eliminates the use of X11/Xorg sessions entirely. The immutable nature of the operating system means the core system is locked down, which helps prevent accidental issues and facilitates reliable updates. If an update fails, users can roll back to the last working state.

The distribution employs Systemd heavily for its operations, with updates being atomic and managed through methods that ensure smooth functionality, including automatic snapshots for the last five OS images. While this approach promotes a stable and modern OS management experience, it may present challenges such as larger update sizes and the necessity of rebooting to process updates.

Despite these challenges, KDE Linux aims to provide a stable and cutting-edge Plasma experience for both users and developers. Even with the underlying changes, users will find the experience remains user-friendly, as the Discover software center will manage both application and system updates, with additional options for installing packages from alternative sources.

The KDE Linux project is grounded in volunteer efforts, promising users there are "no hidden costs, no ads, and no selling of your personal data." Currently in its early phase, the available version is labeled "Testing" and is specifically targeted at enthusiasts and developers eager to contribute and work with an experimental system.

This initiative allows users to experience KDE Plasma as its creators designed it, free from alterations, while also providing developers a reliable environment to engage with the latest technologies without the fear of disrupting their systems.
