Microsoft has confirmed that the latest security update for Windows Server 2019, released in July, has caused significant issues with cluster services and virtual machines (VMs). These problems became evident shortly after the installation of Patch KB5062557, which was issued on July 8.
The internal documentation indicates that the update disrupts the cluster service, a crucial component for managing server clusters, leading to reliability issues. Administrators have reported that affected systems struggle to reconnect to existing clusters and may enter quarantine states. Additionally, some virtual machines experience uncontrollable restarts, accompanied by the error code Event ID 7031 in the logs. Notably, systems running with BitLocker enabled, particularly those utilizing cluster shared volumes, appear to be more vulnerable, facing an increase in errors and failures.
While there is a workaround available upon request, an official patch to resolve these problems has yet to be released. Currently, the Windows Release Health dashboard does not acknowledge these issues or offer a timeline for fixes. Administrators facing these challenges are advised to reach out to Microsoft’s business support for personalized assistance.
This situation isn’t new to many IT departments. Earlier in July, issues with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) had already disrupted the deployment of new updates. Furthermore, the July updates were also meant to address a prior error related to the DHCP service that had been causing network disruptions.
