Microsoft has confirmed a significant synchronization issue affecting Windows Server 2025 users, particularly those utilizing Active Directory (AD) features. This problem, first noted after the September 2025 security update (KB5065426), primarily disrupts the directory synchronization processes for large security groups containing more than 10,000 members.
The security update not only introduced this issue but was also linked to other errors, such as problems with print and file sharing, and hindrances to Digital Rights Management (DRM) and High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) playback.
According to Microsoft’s health dashboard, the synchronization issue hampers the syncing between on-premises Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and cloud directories like Microsoft Entra Connect Sync. As a result, enterprises using hybrid identity configurations are at risk of incomplete or failed group synchronizations, which can jeopardize user access policies and permissions.
Currently, this issue is confined to Windows Server 2025 installations; client systems remain unaffected. While Microsoft aims to release a permanent solution, affected administrators can temporarily mitigate the problem by implementing a registry workaround. However, Microsoft advises caution, as incorrect registry edits can lead to system instability.
To apply the workaround, administrators are instructed to add the following registry key:
Path: ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetPoliciesMicrosoftFeatureManagementOverridesName: 2362988687Type: REG_DWORDValue: 0
Microsoft is actively investigating this situation and commits to delivering a fix in an upcoming update. Until then, IT administrators managing large enterprise networks should closely monitor synchronization activities and refrain from deploying updates that could exacerbate the issue.
More information on this topic is available through Microsoft’s official documentation on directory synchronization and their health status updates.
