Microsoft has issued an emergency fix for Windows Server 2025 to address a significant bug causing Hyper-V virtual machines to freeze or unexpectedly restart. This issue predominantly affects Azure confidential VMs, which are designed to secure data during processing. The freezes occur due to the way the system manages memory paths using guest physical addresses (GPA), leading to instances where VMs could become unresponsive or reboot without warning.
To resolve this, Microsoft has rolled out update KB5061977 as an out-of-band release. This update replaces previous patches and focuses specifically on rectifying problems in the Hyper-V direct send path. Microsoft advises that this fix is especially crucial for Azure confidential VMs and is not expected to impact standard Hyper-V configurations unless they are running preview builds or involved in testing environments.
Importantly, the update is not available through Windows Update. Users whose servers are affected will need to manually download and install the standalone MSU package from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
This recent fix follows a series of emergency patches released by Microsoft, including Hotpatch KB5061258 for Windows 11 LTSC 2024 earlier in the month. The out-of-band KB5061977 update is released shortly after the KB5058502 Preview update brought new features to Windows 11.
