In recent days, reports have surfaced regarding a bug in the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), which has rendered USB devices unusable. Microsoft has already released a patch to address this specific problem, and now, they have rolled out another fix for a widespread issue affecting various versions of Windows.
According to the Windows Release Health dashboard, Microsoft has found a solution for the smart card authentication issue that arose after the October 2025 Patch Tuesday update. After this update, some users experienced errors with their smart cards not being recognized as valid Cryptographic Service Providers (CSPs) in 32-bit applications. This caused problems with signing documents and executing functions that rely on certificate-based authentication.
The error was recorded as Event ID 624 in the system event log, indicating messages about "invalid provider type specified" and "CryptAcquireCertificatePrivateKey error." Microsoft recognized that this issue stemmed from a recent change requiring the use of Key Storage Provider (KSP) instead of CSP for RSA-based smart card certificates in order to bolster security.
While Microsoft has provided a fix for this issue, it will not be distributed through a standard Windows Update. Instead, users must manually change a Windows Registry value, which is not included in the default Windows installation. It’s important to note that modifying registry values carries risks, and incorrect changes can render the system unusable. For those comfortable with making this adjustment, here are the detailed steps:
Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter. If prompted, click Yes to the User Account Control.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftCryptographyCalais.DisableCapiOverrideForRSA exists. If it does, double-click on it and set the Value data to 0.This bug affects multiple Windows versions including Windows 11 (versions 25H2, 24H2, 23H2, 22H2), Windows 10 (version 22H2), and Windows Server (2025, 23H2, 2022, 2019, 2016, 2012 R2).
