Microsoft has announced the deprecation of several features in Windows 11, most notably the Maps app. Scheduled for removal from the Microsoft Store by July 2025, the Maps app will cease to function with a final update that same month. Users will be able to reinstall it until that date, but thereafter, reinstallation will no longer be possible. Although personal data within the app won’t be deleted, it will become nonfunctional post-removal.
The decision also involves the deprecation of the Windows UWP Map control and associated APIs for developers. Microsoft plans to transition users to Azure Maps, which integrates Bing Maps for Enterprise and Azure Maps, suggesting that developers should migrate their solutions within a year after the deprecation notice.
In a surprising move, Microsoft is also deprecating support for Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) enclaves on Windows 11 version 23H2 and earlier versions. However, support for this critical security feature will continue for the newer Windows 11 version 24H2 and beyond. VBS enclaves, which play a significant role in enhancing OS security and are integral to Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-In Security, are being lost in older versions, raising questions about the rationale behind this decision. It appears to focus on aligning support with the latest security features while coinciding with the impending end of support for version 23H2.
Similar actions are taking place regarding Windows Server, with VBS enclave support ending for Windows Server 2022 and earlier versions, while newer versions maintain support.
