A few weeks back, Microsoft released its usual monthly patch update on a Tuesday, addressing 100 security flaws including a vulnerability that was actively exploited. However, many users reported problems with essential recovery and reset functions post-update. In response, Microsoft has issued an "out-of-band" update (KB5066189) aimed at fixing these issues. Users affected by these problems are strongly encouraged to update their devices as soon as possible.
The issues generally manifested in three critical scenarios:
Resetting the PC: Users attempting to reset their machines through System > Recovery > Reset my PC would find the process failing and reverting any changes made, leaving the system unchanged.
Using Windows Update: When users tried to resolve problems by navigating to System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update, the same failure occurred.
Remote Wiping by IT Admins: IT professionals trying to wipe a PC remotely faced issues, particularly when a device containing sensitive data was lost or stolen.
To apply the recent OOB update and resolve these issues, users should open their Settings app or press Windows + I, navigate to Windows Update, and click on "Check for Update." While Microsoft has a set schedule for updates, out-of-band updates are occasionally necessary when urgent issues arise from prior updates.
