Microsoft today released Patch Tuesday updates for June 2024. We have covered them in their dedicated articles here: Windows 11 (KB5039212 / KB5039213) and Windows 10 (KB5039211 / KB5039217 / KB5039214 / KB5039227).

In the meantime, the company has released a new update for Defender anti-malware specifically designed for Windows Operating System installation images, including Windows Imaging Format (WIM) and Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) formats. This latest set of definitions is compatible with Windows 11, all versions of Windows 10, and Windows Servers 2016 and 2019. Such updates are crucial since a Windows installation image might have antiquated anti-malware definitions and software binaries, causing security risks. Additionally, these updates often enhance performance.

Microsoft provides the updated security definitions for Windows images through the security intelligence update version 1.411.111.0, also identified as the Defender package version 1.411.111.0. Microsoft details in a support document that:

At the start, a newly installed Windows system may face vulnerabilities due to outdated Microsoft Defender protection in OS installation images.

Additionally, devices employing the native Windows antivirus or any other security measure stand to benefit from these updates.

This article details the antimalware update package for Microsoft Defender within OS installation images, such as WIM and VHD files. The update is applicable to the following OS installation images:

Version information

The update package enhances the anti-malware client, engine, and signature versions in the OS installation images to the specified versions:

According to Microsoft’s security bulletin, the security intelligence update version 1.411.111.0 introduced last month, includes new detections for various trojans, adware, and backdoor exploits, among other threats. As of now, the most recent update is version 1.413.230.0.
