Microsoft has announced that it will be discontinuing support for the Line Printer Daemon Protocol (LPD), a service that has been included in Windows since Windows Server 2012. This protocol has been marked as deprecated, and Microsoft is urging IT managers to prepare their systems for this transition.
In a recent post on their list of deprecated Windows features, Microsoft warned that once LPD is fully removed, any clients relying on this protocol—such as Unix-based systems—will no longer be able to connect to or print from Windows servers.
Acknowledging the impact this change may have, Microsoft has recommended alternatives for users. Unix clients are encouraged to transition to the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), while Windows clients can utilize the Windows Standard Port Monitor for accessing printers shared by Unix systems. The Standard Port Monitor has existed since Windows 2000 and is designed to facilitate connections to network printers. Microsoft has made this option available since Windows Server 2003 as an alternative to the Line Printer Remote Port Monitor.
Additionally, Microsoft is shifting away from distributing printer drivers through Windows Update, simplifying the process by using class drivers compliant with the Mopria standard. From the beginning of this year, Microsoft has halted the acceptance of new printer drivers from manufacturers for distribution through Windows Update.
This move, while ensuring an improved user experience and streamlined management of printers, also emphasizes the need for users to adapt to new technologies as older protocols become obsolete.
