Recently, Microsoft rolled out a new build, version 26311, as part of the Windows Server Insider Program for Windows Server 2025. Unfortunately, this preview does not introduce any new features.
The tech company has not clarified in its announcement the specific purpose of build 26311 for Windows Server 2025, as it lacks new functionalities when compared to the prior preview version, build 26304.
In contrast, the prior build brought forth a significant enhancement: Windows Defender Application Control for Business (WDAC). This feature integrates various security capabilities into Windows Server 2025.
WDAC acts as a software-based defense mechanism that minimizes the attack surface by defining a list of allowed software that can execute on the affected servers. For Windows Server 2025, Microsoft has crafted a standard policy that can be implemented on the server through PowerShell cmdlets. The OSconfig security configuration platform supports this initiative from Microsoft.
A previously introduced feature in preview build 26311 is the Windows Server 2025 Security Baseline Preview. This capability assists administrators in configuring security through a recommended security posture. It enables them to establish a tailored security baseline for their physical servers or VMs, utilizing over 350 preconfigured Windows security settings.
Additionally, a default policy that administrators can apply on servers using OSconfig and PowerShell cmdlets has been created for this feature.
The latest build in the Insider program for Windows Server 2025 is now downloadable through various channels. However, this version is not accessible in certain countries, and the build’s availability extends until September 15, 2025.
