Microsoft is set to introduce a paid service for hotpatching in Windows Server 2025, allowing customers to avoid the hassle of frequent reboots. This feature, which was previewed in 2024, will officially be available starting July 1, 2025.
Starting this summer, businesses will have to pay $1.50 per CPU core each month to access this hotpatching option. This service is aimed at reducing the number of required reboots from twelve to just four annually. Each year, there will be four baseline updates scheduled for January, April, July, and October, which will necessitate a reboot. However, two of the three months each quarter will provide hotpatches—updates that can be applied without restarting the system.
To be eligible, servers need to run on Windows Server 2025 Standard or Datacenter editions and be integrated with Azure Arc. Importantly, users of Azure Editions (including Azure IaaS, Azure Local, and Azure Stack) will continue to receive hotpatching at no cost.
Those who participated in the preview program must disenroll before June 30 if they do not wish to transition to the paid model. Microsoft has clarified that while the hotpatching system will primarily operate as planned, certain critical updates may still require installation outside the hotpatch schedule for security purposes.
