Patch Tuesday has often been met with mixed feelings from Windows Home and Pro users, primarily due to the requirement of a reboot for seemingly minor updates. However, Microsoft is set to change this with the introduction of in-memory hot-patching available for Windows Server starting July 1, 2025. This feature allows updates to be applied directly in memory without needing to restart the server, significantly reducing downtime.
Hot-patching is a method of updating software without having to interrupt its operation. Traditionally, updates would necessitate reboots, especially in complex operating systems like Windows. With this new feature, Microsoft aims to limit server reboots to just once every three months for most updates, with specific "baseline" patches requiring a reboot in January, April, July, and October.
The implementation of hot-patching will be available at a cost of $1.50 per CPU core. Users can enable this feature through Azure Arc, and it has been in preview for users to trial for free.
Microsoft states that this functionality has already been effectively utilized in their Windows Server Datacenter Azure Edition and has improved productivity for their Xbox team, significantly shortening project timelines from weeks to days. In discussions with engineers, Microsoft suggests that hot-patching not only streamlines updates but also enhances security by allowing administrators to apply crucial updates promptly instead of waiting for a scheduled reboot.
