Microsoft has recently undergone a significant reorganization of its Windows division, led by Pavan Davuluri, who has been promoted to oversee all Windows engineering efforts. This new structure aims to unify the oversight of Windows client and server teams, facilitating a more collaborative approach to meet the company’s strategic priorities.
In a memo shared with employees, Davuluri emphasized that combining these two teams under one roof is pivotal for focusing on their goals. “Moving the teams working on Windows client and server together brings focus to delivering against our priorities,” he stated. Since last year, Davuluri has managed both Windows and Surface, but his recent promotion grants him a broader remit that now includes various sub-groups such as Core OS, Data Intelligence and Fundamentals, Security, and Engineering Systems.
Historically, Core OS had been a part of the Azure group since 2018, but in his new role, Davuluri hinted at continued collaboration with Azure, especially in areas like Storage, Networking, and Security. “There are clear areas where we know we will continue to work with and support the Azure organization,” he noted.
While details on how this reorganization will impact the future engineering of Windows remain somewhat vague, the overarching goal is to redefine Windows into what Davuluri describes as an "agentic OS," marking a significant shift in the platform’s evolution.
