In recent days, a notable bug affecting the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) has prompted user complaints regarding unusable USB devices. To address this issue, Microsoft has issued a patch, yet there remains another critical fix that users need to be aware of.
According to Microsoft’s Windows Release Health dashboard, a solution is now available for the smart card authentication problem that arose following the October 2025 Patch Tuesday update. Users experienced difficulties as their smart cards were no longer recognized as valid Cryptographic Service Providers (CSPs), leading to errors in document signing and certificate-based application functions.
This problem was recorded as Event ID 624 in the system’s event log, often accompanied by messages indicating "invalid provider type specified" and "CryptAcquireCertificatePrivateKey error." The root cause was identified as a significant change in Windows, which now necessitates the use of Key Storage Provider (KSP) instead of CSP for RSA-based smart card certificates to enhance security measures.
While Microsoft has provided a fix for those affected, the downside is that it will not be delivered via a standard Windows Update. Instead, users must modify a Windows Registry value, a task that carries risks, as improper changes may lead to system issues. For those who feel confident in making this change, here are the steps:
regedit
, and pressing Enter. Approve the User Account Control if prompted.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftCryptographyCalais
.DisableCapiOverrideForRSA
. If it exists, double-click it and set the Value data to 0
.This bug impacted a range of Windows versions, including Windows 11 (versions 25H2, 24H2, 23H2, 22H2), Windows 10 (version 22H2), and various editions of Windows Server (2025, 23H2, 2022, 2019, 2016, and 2012 R2).
