A recent update to Windows 11, released in October, has introduced a serious glitch affecting users relying on the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). This bug prevents USB devices, including keyboards and mice, from functioning within WinRE, which hinders users’ ability to navigate recovery options.
This issue originated from the October security update (KB5066835), which aimed to fix over 170 security flaws but inadvertently caused this significant problem. Windows 11 users, as well as those on Windows Server 2025, are experiencing the inability to use USB devices in WinRE, although they function correctly within the regular operating system. Microsoft is currently working on a fix, expected to be issued shortly.
For those affected, one potential solution is to use an old-style PS/2 keyboard or mouse, as these devices are not impacted by the glitch. If such hardware is unavailable and users are able to boot into Windows without issues, they may opt to uninstall the problematic October update. This can be done by going to Windows Update, selecting Update History, and then uninstalling update KB5066835.
In addition to the WinRE issue, several other bugs have surfaced in this update. One affects IIS websites hosted on Windows 11, causing them to fail to load. Another problem impacts the File Explorer preview window, which may erroneously indicate that certain files could harm the computer.
Microsoft plans to resolve these issues in future updates, working diligently to ensure a smoother experience for its users moving forward.
