Navigating the Process of Acquiring Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows Server

Deluxe company -

Activating Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows Server can extend the lifespan of your organization’s server systems by offering continued updates even after the official support period ends. This approach not only helps in reducing costs but also provides ample time for transitioning to an updated server version. This article discusses the procedure to acquire and implement ESU for Windows Server.

ESUs are readily available for both Azure Arc-enabled servers and non-Azure servers that are connected to Azure Arc without any initial cost. These updates can be managed and applied at scale via the Azure portal or using Azure Policy. The billing for these services is done monthly through the Azure subscription, and there is no need for activation of product keys.

From September 2023, Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 can efficiently activate ESUs by integrating with Azure Arc. This integration allows for the straightforward connection and management of your servers, facilitating a hybrid environment supported by Azure Arc-enabled servers. For Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 on Arc-enabled setups, follow the outlined steps to prepare your systems adequately.

If linking with Azure Arc is not feasible for ESU application, the Microsoft Activation Key (MAK) can alternatively be retrieved via the Windows Admin Center.

Now that we have learned how to get ESU, let’s see how to deliver it. To deliver ESU, follow the following guides.

First, we are going to provision the ESU license from Azure Arc for the outdated Windows Server and then link it to multiple Arc-enabled servers. You can follow the steps given below to do the same.

That is how you create a license.

After establishing the license, it is essential to connect our resources which will utilize the specified protocols in the license and receive Extended Security Updates post their support period ending. Follow the outlined steps to achieve this.

Upon completion, you can verify the status of the consoles. Their ESU status will read “Enabled.”

Some scenarios may render your server eligible for Extended Security Updates (ESUs) patches without additional costs. These include Development/Test (Visual Studio) and Disaster Recovery (DR instances covered under Software Assurance or subscription only). Both situations necessitate that customers already employ Windows Server 2012/R2 ESUs that are activated by Azure Arc on billable, production servers.

This is the method to register for Extended Security Updates and distribute them across all qualifying resources.

Extended Support and Extended Security Updates (ESU) represent two distinct stages in the lifecycle of Microsoft products. During Extended Support, you receive Mainstream support, including security updates and paid support; however, new features or changes are not included. In contrast, Extended Security Updates (ESU) provide significant security updates beyond the product’s official support period.

Server or Microsoft 365 administrators can verify the ESU status through the Azure Admin Center. They must access the Azure Admin portal and proceed to Extended Security Updates > Eligible resources. This section displays all the resources where the ESU is enabled.
