Today marks the second Tuesday of the month, indicating that it’s time for Patch Tuesday once again. Consequently, Microsoft is deploying the monthly security update (referred to as the “B release”) for October 2024 on Windows Server 20H2 and Windows 10 for the most up-to-date supported versions, including 20H2, 21H2, and 22H2.
The latest updates are being rolled out under KB5044273, increasing the builds to 19044.5011 and 19045.5011. You can find standalone download links for the new update on the Microsoft Update Catalog here.
The primary focus of this release is on security patches.
Highlights
Following a brief period without any, known issues have returned:
Current Concerns with This Update
Symptoms Observed
Suggested Solutions
Once you apply this security update, you may encounter problems booting into Linux, especially if your system is set up for dual-booting with Windows. This issue could prevent your device from launching Linux, leading to an error message stating: “Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation. Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation.”
The Windows security update for August 2024 introduces a Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) feature aimed at preventing the use of outdated and insecure boot managers on Windows-running devices. However, it’s important to note that this SBAT update won’t be implemented on devices where dual booting is identified. In some instances, the dual-boot detection feature may have overlooked certain customized dual-boot configurations and mistakenly applied the SBAT setting.
For more details on a workaround for this issue, please visit the Windows release health site.
Additionally, several older versions of Windows 10 have received updates today, which are detailed below along with their corresponding release notes (KB) and download links available at the Microsoft Update Catalog:
17763.6414
14393.7428
10240.20796
It is important to note that Windows 10 20H2 and Windows 10 1909 have completed their servicing period. Additionally, non-LTSC versions of 21H2 have also come to the end of their servicing.
