Attacks are being carried out exploiting a serious vulnerability within Windows (CVE-2025-33053), which has been rated with a CVSS score of 8.8, indicating a high risk. This vulnerability affects outdated components of Internet Explorer 11, notably EdgeHTML and MSHTML, which are used in several legacy applications. For an attack to succeed, victims must click a malicious link; if accomplished, the attackers can deploy harmful code onto the system.
All versions of Windows and Windows Server that are currently supported, as well as certain unsupported editions like Windows Server 2008, are vulnerable and still receiving patches due to the critical nature of this flaw.
In addition to the aforementioned vulnerability, there is also public awareness regarding another Windows vulnerability (CVE-2025-33073) that may lead to imminent attacks due to poor access controls. This could allow attackers to gain elevated user privileges. Microsoft has identified several additional vulnerabilities in products like Office and SharePoint Server, rated similarly high on the CVSS scale, which could also result in malicious code infiltration through the Office preview feature.
