The January Patch Day updates from Microsoft have encountered installation issues on systems that have the Citrix Session Recording Agent installed. Microsoft has acknowledged that devices running certain versions of this software may face problems completing the installation.
The specific problem stems from the Citrix Session Recording Agent version 2411 released in December 2024. According to reports, affected devices can start the download and application of the January 2025 Windows security updates without problems. However, once the device restarts to finalize the installation, an error message appears stating "Something did not work as expected. Don’t worry, changes will be rolled back," resulting in the system reverting to the previous updates.
Microsoft has indicated that since version 2411 is relatively new, only a limited number of organizations might be impacted, with home users likely unaffected. However, Citrix has pointed out that several operating system versions are experiencing issues, including Windows Server 2019, 2022, and 2025, as well as Windows 10 22H2, Windows 11 22H2, 23H2, and 24H2 desktop systems.
To bypass this issue and install the updates, users need to disable the “Citrix Session Recording Monitor” service prior to installation. The recommended steps include:
