Unveiling of AMD’s Epyc 4004: Server Chips Masquerading as Desktop CPUs

Deluxe company -

AMD is unveiling Epyc chips for the first time, remarkable for their affordability akin to that of desktop processors. The new product targets Small and Medium-sized Businesses (SMBs), characterized by inexpensive costs and reduced core counts.

AMD Epyc is synonymous with server rack positioning, accounting for a vast majority of the Epyc chips, with up to 128 cores per socket. The newly launched processors deviate from this norm. The socket is an identical match with the newer Ryzen desktop chips (AM5), and a maximum of 16 available cores, the same as a Ryzen 9 designated for workstations.

This new development raises the question about why AMD would assign the highly reputed Epyc tag to such “low-end” chips. As per AMD, a niche remained untouched until this moment: SMBs requiring server-like features on a smaller scale. This entails server OS compatibility (for instance, Windows Server) and supporting software RAID and BMC (Baseboard Management Controller). AMD, therefore, is merging “entry-level” and “enterprise-grade” in a manner not previously encountered.

Like the regular AM5-based Ryzen chips, these new processors can support up to 128GB of DDR5 system memory with ECC. There are, however, differences from AM5 in this sector: for instance, up to 28 PCIe 5.0 lanes for storage, networking, and GPU acceleration, among others. The need for a video card might be unnecessary as every Epyc 4004 chip presumably possesses an iGPU, similar to its Ryzen 7000 relatives.

AMD is specifically targeting expanding businesses that are possibly considering acquiring a server for the first time. However, because there are a limited number of cores, their processors are not meant for dividing into multiple VMs. They anticipate that for most cases, the needs will be relatively simple since smaller organizations usually don’t have IT personnel, hence the need for the user-friendliness.

The new Epyc chips are available through various channels. Some of these include OEMs like Lenovo and Supermicro. Cloud service providers such as OVHcloud are also selling these chips.

Here is a quick overview of the new Epyc lineup:
