A new feature is set to enhance usability in Windows 11, allowing users to change the position of their on-screen indicators, such as volume and brightness flyouts. This update will be included in the Windows 11 24H2 and newer builds, along with Windows Server 2025.
In Windows 10, on-screen indicators typically display in the top-left corner when volume adjustments are made. Conversely, Windows 11 shifted these indicators to the bottom of the screen, embracing a minimalist design that maximizes screen real estate. However, this positioning may not suit everyone, which is why Microsoft is introducing this toggle option.
The feature is currently being tested in Windows Server Build 26433, and it will be accessible via Settings > System > Notifications. Users will have the choice to position the indicators in the top left, top center, or bottom center of the screen, thereby avoiding obstruction of whatever task they are engaged in.
It’s worth noting that the option to move indicators to the left side of the screen is not available. This limitation likely stems from concerns that overlapping indicators could interfere with the Start menu aligned to the left.
While this new flexibility is a welcome addition, some are left wondering why a similar toggle hasn’t been implemented for the taskbar itself. Though users have long requested the ability to reposition the taskbar, Microsoft has yet to provide a built-in solution, leaving third-party tools as the only alternative.
As users await further enhancements, they’re encouraged to share what features they believe would benefit from a similar toggle option.
