Another Windows update has introduced fresh complications for users, this time due to a bug in Windows Hello that locks them out following Microsoft’s latest security patch. The issue originates from the April 2025 security update, KB5055523, which affects Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025.
The bug specifically impacts users with Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement (DRTM) or System Guard Secure Launch enabled who opt to use the “Reset this PC” function while selecting “Keep my Files” during recovery. After the reset, these users may discover they’re unable to log in; instead of the typical face or PIN-based access, they’re met with error messages such as “Your PIN isn’t available” or “Something went wrong with face setup.”
For now, Microsoft has provided temporary workarounds rather than a permanent solution. Users can regain PIN access by following the “Set my PIN” prompt on the login screen to re-enroll in Windows Hello. For those who use facial recognition, they must navigate to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Facial recognition to reconfigure it.
While this workaround helps regain access, it can understandably cause frustration for those unable to log in using their PIN. Additionally, this incident is compounded by previous issues linked to the same update, including a bug that caused the uninstallation of Copilot on some machines.
Further complicating matters, there is a new safeguard hold affecting devices with SenseShield’s sprotect.sys driver, leading to blue or black screen errors. An official fix from Microsoft is anticipated, but at least users can work around the login issue for now.
