Today, Microsoft announced the general availability of Windows Server 2025, along with its CPU support list. This list includes high-performance processors such as Intel’s flagship 64-core Granite Rapids and Emerald Rapids, all the way down to Intel’s entry-level dual-core Pentium models.
The supported Intel CPUs encompass multiple generations of Intel Xeon processors, specifically the second through fifth generations of Xeon Scalable processors corresponding to the Emerald Rapids, Sapphire Rapids, Ice Lake, and Cascade Lake architectures. Additionally, it covers the Xeon D series, which is based on Ice Lake, along with the Xeon E-series that features Raptor Lake architectures, and Intel’s Xeon 6 series, which is derived from Granite Rapids.
Interestingly, two Pentium-branded processors are included on this list: the G7400 and G7400T. These are older dual-core consumer chips based on the Alder Lake architecture, designed for entry-level desktop use. Each features two P-cores and four threads, operating at 46W for the G7400 and 35W for the G7400T. The reason for Microsoft’s inclusion of these particular models remains unclear; it is possible they offer the minimum required features to run Server 2025, though this is merely speculation.
For AMD users, Windows Server 2025 is compatible with all modern EPYC CPUs, spanning from Zen 2 to Zen 5. This includes the AMD EPYC 7002 series, 7003 series, 4004 series, 8004 series, 9004 series, and 9005 series. In contrast to Intel’s supported processors, Microsoft has not tested any of the mainstream consumer Ryzen CPUs.
It’s important to note that the previously mentioned list of supported processors serves merely as a prerequisite for system certification. This means that only systems equipped with the CPUs listed can qualify for certification to run Windows Server 2025. Moreover, the certification is not limited to these CPUs alone; Microsoft plans to expand this list with additional CPUs in the future.
The general availability of Windows Server 2025 has just been announced, and it will receive support for the next decade. This server-oriented operating system comes with numerous enhancements and features, including improved I/O throughput performance, GPU partitioning, and VBS enclaves.
