Microsoft has unveiled the Windows Server Preview Build 26280. This build includes the Desktop Experience and Server Core installation options for the Datacenter and Standard editions, as well as the Annual Channel for Container Host and Azure Edition.
The build is identified as a preview for Windows Server 2025. If you are part of the Server Flighting program, you will receive this update automatically today.
The latest update sees the integration of the Windows Admin Center (WAC) app right into the build, simplifying your installation process on the server. This app can be accessed and downloaded from the Windows Server Store or comes pre-packaged as an inbox app on the Windows Server Desktop.
In addition, the update features a newly updated Feedback Hub app, with the latest version available through the app’s settings tab for updates.
However, there are a couple of significant issues noted. One notable discrepancy is with Sysprep’s failure to generalize images due to a current bug, which will be resolved in a forthcoming update.
Another issue revolves around a mislabeling that might show this build as an update for Windows 11. Despite the labeling, the correct package for the Windows Server update is installed, and corrections to labeling are planned for future updates.
Applying the WinPE-Powershell optional component does not correctly install Powershell in WinPE. As a result, Powershell cmdlets will fail. Customers who are dependent on Powershell in WinPE should not use this build.
Windows Server 26280 also has an issue where archiving event logs with the “wevtutil al” command causes the Windows Event Log service to crash and the archive operation to fail. The service must be restarted by executing “Start-Service EventLog” from an administrative command line prompt.
Microsoft has published the ISO and VHDX files for Windows Server 2025 preview build 26280.5000 and the Azure Edition. The company has also made available language and optional feature packs.
It’s worth mentioning that Windows Server 26280 is set to expire on September 15, 2025, just a few weeks earlier than the planned EOS of Windows 10 in October 2025.
